Primary School PE and Sports Funding… What is it and where has it come from?

The government is providing additional funding of £150 million per annum for a limited amount of time to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding – provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport – will be allocated to primary school headteachers.

This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools.

How will St Barnabas CEVC Primary School be spending it’s allocation?

At St Barnabas CEVC Primary School Sport is something we are very proud of. Children have rich and varied opportunities to take part in sport for fun, personal achievement and development, physical development and competition.

We are well resourced. Teachers and coaches who deliver PE in Curriculum time, and who facilitate extra curriculur sporting opportunities, are passionate about what they do and help our children to achieve in all areas of sport and physical activity.

However, there are always ways we can improve our provision and practice. The additional Sports and PE Funding will help us greatly.

We plan to:

Use specialist coaches to work with groups of children
Use specialist coaches to work alongside teaching staff to improve their skills and knowledge
Provide professional development opportunities for teachers
Employ two swimming coaches for all swimming sessions- Improving the quality of teaching and learning
‘Buy into’ the local schools partnership for sport- ensuring value for money
Enhance our equipment and resources to enhance our teaching and learning in this area
