British Values

Intent
At St Barnabas Primary School, we aim to prepare children for life in modern Britain by equipping them with the skills needed to be responsible, respectful and active citizens who contribute positively to society.

The fundamental British Values are introduced, discussed and lived out through the ethos and daily work of the school. Our own school core values are closely linked and underpinned by the British Values of:

  • Democracy

  • Rule of Law

  • Individual Liberty

  • Mutual Respect

  • Tolerance of Different Cultures and Religions

Children are encouraged to develop their understanding and appreciation of diversity. They learn to celebrate what we have in common and to promote respect for the different protected characteristics as defined by law.

Our school assemblies, alongside Religious Education (RE) and Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE), are planned to enhance children’s understanding of these values and to encourage them to put both the British Values and our School Values into practice.

Implementation
Children at St Barnabas are provided with many opportunities to become responsible, respectful and active citizens. We actively promote democracy through school-wide processes. For example, each year, Year 6 pupils have the opportunity to stand for House Captain by preparing a manifesto and presenting it to their peers. Following campaigns, all children vote for their chosen candidate, and results are shared in assembly.

Our Worship Warriors also play an important role in leading aspects of collective worship and supporting our school’s Christian ethos, giving children another meaningful way to share their voice and demonstrate responsibility.

We encourage children to celebrate differences and to feel positive about who they are, where they fit in the world, and the diversity around them. Through RE, pupils develop their knowledge of world faiths and their understanding of the beliefs, values and traditions of others within society.

British Values are also embedded across the curriculum. For example:

  • In PSHE, children learn how to be strong, active and tolerant members of a diverse society, understanding both their rights and responsibilities.

  • In Science and Maths, children practise cooperation, sensitivity and tolerance during collaborative problem-solving.

  • In English, children explore themes of mutual respect, tolerance and individual liberty through texts and discussion.

Whole-school assemblies reinforce these values, encouraging children to demonstrate mutual respect towards others. We also mark special national and cultural occasions such as Remembrance Day, national sporting events and significant events in the calendar of the British Monarchy, ensuring children develop pride in and knowledge of our shared culture.

Impact
By the time children leave St Barnabas, they will:

  • Be responsible, respectful and active citizens who contribute positively to society.

  • Achieve academic success and demonstrate good character, celebrating what we have in common and respecting differences.

  • Understand and respect democracy, the rule of law and individual liberty.

  • Continue their education journey showing mutual respect and tolerance towards people of all creeds and faiths.
