Computing
Intent
At St Barnabas Nursery and Primary, we want our children to become confident, responsible and capable users of technology. Computing equips pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
Our ambition is for pupils to develop strong foundations in digital technology, programming, digital creativity and digital safety, alongside the ability to think logically, solve problems and make informed choices online.
We place a strong emphasis on online safety and digital citizenship so that pupils learn how to stay safe, respectful and responsible when using technology. Pupils are also taught how to use emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, in a safe, ethical and purposeful way.
We want pupils to leave St Barnabas as digitally literate learners who understand both the opportunities and risks of technology and who aspire to use it positively.
Implementation
Computing is taught through a carefully sequenced and progressive curriculum organised into blocks across each year group. Knowledge and skills are revisited and built upon so that learning becomes secure over time.
Teaching focuses on four key areas:
-
Digital Technology
-
Digital Programming
-
Digital Creativity
-
Digital Safety, including online safety and AI awareness
Online safety is woven through every unit so that pupils regularly revisit how to keep themselves and others safe.
Lessons follow a consistent sequence of Connect, Explain, Example, Attempt, Apply and Challenge, supporting pupils to build understanding step by step.
Explicit vocabulary is taught so that pupils can talk confidently about computing concepts. Knowledge Notes and digital resources reduce cognitive load and spotlight the most important information.
High quality oracy is embedded within computing lessons. Pupils explain their thinking, discuss solutions, rehearse key vocabulary and reflect on their learning.
Retrieval practice and revisiting ensure that pupils remember and apply prior learning.
Teachers adapt and scaffold learning so that all pupils, including those with SEND or who are disadvantaged, can access and succeed.
Impact
By the time pupils leave St Barnabas, they:
-
Use technology confidently and responsibly
-
Understand how to stay safe online and make informed choices
-
Can write and debug simple programs
-
Create digital content with purpose and creativity
-
Understand how to use AI safely and ethically
-
Show resilience and problem solving skills
Pupils leave St Barnabas as confident digital citizens who feel a sense of belonging in the digital world and who aspire to use technology to support their learning and future opportunities.
