Physical Education

Intent

At St Barnabas Nursery and Primary, we believe that physical education plays a vital role in supporting children’s physical health, mental wellbeing and personal development. We want every child to enjoy being active and to develop the confidence, competence and motivation to lead healthy, active lives.

Our ambition is for pupils to develop fundamental movement skills, improve agility, balance and coordination, and learn to apply these skills across a range of sports and physical activities. PE also supports the development of teamwork, resilience, respect and perseverance.

We want pupils to leave St Barnabas with a positive attitude towards physical activity and the aspiration to remain active beyond primary school.

Implementation

Physical Education is taught through a carefully planned and progressive curriculum that builds skills and understanding over time.

PE is delivered in partnership with PH Sports, whose specialist coaches work alongside staff to provide high quality teaching and ensure consistency and progression.

Pupils experience a wide range of activities, including:

  • Games and team sports

  • Gymnastics

  • Dance

  • Athletics

  • Outdoor and adventurous activities

In Key Stage 2, pupils receive swimming instruction, developing water confidence and essential life saving skills in line with national expectations.

We also offer additional enrichment opportunities through our partnership with Dauntsey’s Independent School, enabling pupils to access a broader range of sporting experiences and specialist facilities.

Lessons follow a clear teaching sequence that supports pupils to practise skills, apply them in different contexts and reflect on performance. Teachers and coaches adapt activities so that all pupils, including those with SEND or who are disadvantaged, can participate and succeed.

Extra curricular clubs, competitions and events provide further opportunities for pupils to develop skills, confidence and enjoyment in sport.

Impact

By the time pupils leave St Barnabas, they:

  • Enjoy being physically active and understand why it is important

  • Demonstrate improved fitness, coordination and control

  • Apply skills confidently across a range of sports

  • Work well as part of a team and show good sportsmanship

  • Have developed water confidence and swimming skills

Pupils leave St Barnabas as confident, resilient and motivated individuals who feel a sense of belonging through physical activity and who aspire to lead healthy, active lives.
